Location and surroundings
The Orkney Islands are a group of 70 islands situated at the very north of Scotland. They are situated at a northern latitude of up to 59 degrees, the same as the very south of Norway, Saint Petersburgh or 50 miles below the south of Greenland. Despite its extreme northern location, the islands enjoy a milder climated due to the Gulf Stream, along with the direct contact with the sea which always softens extreme temperatures.
This latitude also allows us to spot the magical northern lights, Aurora Borealis. With the vast array of landscapes contained within the island, the purity of its skies, and its prehistoric sites, your experience is transformed into something truly sensational.
Wind is a dominant factor of the islands, so we recommend jackets and waterproofs all year round. Summers are mild with neverending sunlight – you can even read a book at midnight.
We always recommend confortable and waterproof clothing and footwear, since the rain tends to show up when you least expect it. You can get all 4 seasons in a day.
Here is a unique destination where stereotypes are broken. The islands were only handed over to the Scottish Kingdom in 1468 by Christian 1st of Denmark and Norway.
Visitors to the Orkney Islands are surprised by the richness of the prehistoric sites that exist, and the modern traveller wonders how such civilisation exited in a place that seems so remote. However, we must understand that in prehistoric times and up until the 18th century, the Orkney Islands were very strategically situated. They were in a “service area”, along a motorway of trade and travel between Scandanavia and Europe. Real roads didn’t exist, so life at sea was vital.
It became a prosperous place, whose diverse cultures have flourished since prehistoric times and where time has been frozen and preserved so that we can relish in this marvel today.
